The Old Swing Bridge: A Must-See on This Year’s Holiday Vacation to Sunset Beach

Besides being a wonderful place to spend a holiday vacation, Sunset Beach, North Carolina, has something no other place in the area has – a rescued pontoon swing bridge. This bridge, built in 1958 was replaced by a newer, modern bridge in November 2010. At that time, the Old Bridge Preservation Society was formed to save and relocate the famous and much loved swing bridge. Now you can visit the bridge and reminisce, walk through the museum, and attend the many events taking place year round.

It was only by the help of many people that the old bridge could be moved to land donated by the owners of Twin Lakes Restaurant and Island Breeze. Today restoration work continues on the old bridge and special events are occasionally held there – as recently as Christmas at the Old Bridge held on December 8.

Time Warner Cable News featured the bridge in the following segment captured on Youtube:

The bridge tender’s office has been recreated and a museum added. A novel has been written by Marybeth Whalen entitled The Bridge Tender. Set in Sunset Beach, the story involves a romance, a bridge tender and the old Sunset Bridge. This book can be purchased at the Pelican Bookstore. Proceeds from the book benefit the Old Bridge Preservation Society. The book, a cookbook, and a Christmas ornament can also be ordered online from the society.

ATMC featured the bridge in a story for the June edition of Our Hometown. This was also captured on Youtube:

There is an assortment of ways you can help. The Old Bridge Preservation Society is a non-profit organization that depends on volunteers and contributors. You can give the gift of your time, service or monetary support and your contributions are tax deductible. Volunteers are also needed to help with the following:

• Assist with landscaping, beautification or maintenance

• Work on site at the Old Bridge Store

• Participate in a committee

• Act as a guide or docent

• Help to present programs at the Old Bridge

• Share OBPS information at festivals and events

If you’re interested in volunteering, please call the volunteer coordinator at 315-729-6476.

You can also enroll a child or grandchild as a Junior Bridge Tender ($30) and they’ll receive a special certificate suitable for framing. It makes a great Christmas or birthday present! If you make a gift to honor a special person, they will be sent an acknowledgement with your name. To make a special gift in honor of a loved one, or to make a legacy gift, contact us at OBPS, 404 3rd St., Sunset Beach NC, 28468.

All of us at Sloane Realty would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and hope you will stop by the old swing bridge and museum while you’re in the area over the holiday season.
